The value of point-of-care testing (POCT) across a multisite network

Optimising point-of-care testing in critical care

When the multisite SHAB laboratory and its center at Hospital Jean Bernard determined a need for new blood gas analysers, a robust, standalone solution facilitating remote management was the only way forward.

The blood gas analysers were to be situated across the hospital’s locations in critical care units including the ED, ICU, pulmonology ward and maternity ward.

While the analysers would be installed, checked, and maintained by laboratory staff, Hospital Jean Bernard needed a uniform pool of devices that would be user-friendly for staff working with patients at the point of care.

We had to train several hundred nurses on the 18 newly installed analysers, across eight healthcare centers. This would not have been possible without the help of Radiometer’s service engineers and the solutions with which they provided us.

The benefits of Remote Support

Hospital Jean Bernard implemented Radiometer’s AQURE middleware solution, enabling laboratory staff to support biologists and service engineers in the field, from the central lab.

With the analysers connected to the cloud, remote monitoring, troubleshooting, and calibration supported a reduction in travel to devices at different points of care.

In turn, this also increased device uptime, enabling greater analyser availability.

Accreditation and sustained support

Dr. Maitte also acknowledged how Radiometer’s expert advice and solid support helped the hospital in obtaining accreditation and maintaining adherence to quality standards.

She explained: “Radiometer offers customers an annual account review and report. Data is drawn from the cloud to analyse activity and analyser downtime, and to construct an action plan ensuring continuous improvements and the development the reciprocal relationship.”

Overall, leveraging the diverse benefits of AQURE has enabled Hospital Jean Bernard to provide faster patient care, and improved quality of care – at the point of care.

In the field, Radiometer’s application specialists are of great assistance for issues relating to reproducibility and how to program devices for correlations. They provide an array of useful support, especially for large implementations.
